Is ignorance bliss?

There’s a long list of reasons why this country is divided arguably more now than any time in the last 150 years. One primary reason is that we’re no longer arguing about how to make America a better country. Now, conservatives are working to save the country while Democrats are bulldozing to tear it down.. But another reason is the emergency of a 24/7 political news cycle. It used to be that people got their daily dose of news via the morning newspaper or before dinner during the 5pm news. First, there was the national nightly news, and then…

Conservative gun test forthcoming

For years, Democrats have been trying to destroy the National Rifle Association (NRA). They’ve been trying to kill them through our court system, as well as in the court of public opinion. They’ve been banging on them with lawsuit after lawsuit, draining their legal funds, while also blaming every act of gun violence on the NRA – despite the shooter having never been an NRA member. The fact is, NRA members are responsible citizens. Not all of them even own guns, but those who do understand the seriousness and responsibility that goes with owning such a weapon and are…

There’s no perfect solution

Human relations, communities, societies, and nations are far too complex for a foolproof solution. Yet, the way people go about their politics, you would think that the perfect solution is out there that would solve everything for everyone, if only we would put it into action. This leads to so many of the discourse problems we have. People are looking for answers, but their expectations on just how effective those answers will be needs some serious adjusting. There is not a problem on earth with a corresponding solution that doesn’t cause more or different problems somewhere else. You don’t…

A dose of perspective: now

The teaching of American history in our public school systems is clearly a problem. Between Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project teaching our children that the country was founded on racism and the nearly universal leftist bias of school teachers, our kids don’t stand a chance. Unless we teach them at home. That’s been well-discussed in conservative news outlets. But the problem is actually a level deeper than that. We need to teach our kids (and now adults) perspective. The facts are that the Founders did own slaves. There was slavery. Gays, women, and blacks only recently had…

The plus side of cancel culture

Everything has an upside. That’s what we learn when we understand that God is good, things happen for a reason, and good comes from all things (even if it’s not immediately obvious what it is.) Consider cancel culture. There’s been plenty written about how Orwellian, horrible, inhuman, and unfair it is. It doesn’t allow for redemption, and creates an atmosphere of fear that prevents many from sharing their point of view. But consider the plus side. As with all things, there is some good in cancel culture. First, it should teach many a lesson that there is never an…

Republicans aren’t assholes, which is the problem

I found my self watching the season two DVD set of Saturday Night Live, when I looked at the photo booklet that accompanied the set. In the booklet, there’s a picture of a note from Lily Tomlin which said: “Don’t be timidDon’t be non-descriptBe assholes” And that sums up what the Republican Party has been since I’ve been aware of it. The Republican Party is timid. They are nondescript. And the second one is really the key. That they are nondescript. In absence of taking any sort of stand and showing any conviction at all, the Republican Party, and…

Evidence means nothing

This is where we are as a nation. With endless evidence sitting in front of our faces, way too many people don’t have the interpretive or critical thinking skills necessary to draw the correct, or any conclusions, from them. Cities like Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, or San Francisco, are unlivable hellholes, and they’ve been run by Democrats for decades, yet we continue to vote them back in. There are states in which students are back in school and playing out their sport seasons with no deaths, but other states seem to be unaware that demonstrably safe. The Republican Party has…

The government works for us

Said another way, the government answers to us. (Because you’d have a hard time making the case that it works for anyone but them.) One of the foundational differences between conservatives and leftists is that conservatives believe and understand that the government answers to us. We elect them. We pay their salaries. They represent us. We tell them what we want them to do. Conversely, leftists believe government is all-knowing and all-seeing. Government has “experts,” who know better than the common folk. Government is to be trusted not only because they know best, but they specifically know what good…

Absence of empathy

I wrote a post back in August that motivated a reader to tell me I have an “absence of empathy.” One can read the posts on this site (and one should) to get a feel for the ideas expressed. In general, I challenge notions like everyone is racist, masks and lockdowns will save us, and everyone is a victim. Because of these points of view, especially as expressed in this post, I was told I have an absence of empathy. That’s not surprising. Empathy in 2020 is being the first to say that “hate is not welcome here,” “all…
