“White privilege” is a narrative

The concept of “white privilege” is a destructive narrative with little basis in reality. It oversimplifies something that can’t be quantified – that all white people (men, in particular) can live their lives without fear of race-based harassment or suspicion, while others – specifically blacks – live in constant fear and must always be looking over their shoulder. In short, it’s lazy thinking. A concept first crystalized by W.E.B. Du Bois in the 1930s and made popular in the late 80s by Peggy McIntosh, a women’s studies scholar at Wellesley, white privilege has become a fairly popular narrative in…

Racism: “If you talk about it, it exists”

Enough, already, about racism. Please. Enough! As long as we keep talking about racism… as long as we blame everything on racism… as long as we claim the reason anyone does anything is racism… as long as we justify outcomes with racism… as long as we keep calling people racists… as long as we’re just certain that someone was motivated by racism… as long as we continue to loosely and carelessly make everything about racism, we will keep racism alive. The thing about the perception of racism is it is almost always subjective. We are not in the hearts…

The media’s so dumb (and Trump knows it)

For four years, we’ve had to hear nearly every reporter, media pundit, political strategist, and politician weigh in on President Trump’s Twitter behavior. Most have, in some way, be it heavy-handed or implied, wished he hadn’t said one thing or another, or just would stop altogether. Especially the media. When Trump tweets, he does it to bypass the media and directly reach those who choose to follow him. He does this because he can speak unfiltered, without someone in the Democrat/Media Party telling you what he was really saying. If the media would just let him tweet without saying…

Celebrating two years

Two years ago today, I set off to write a daily blog. It’s called The Bubbler. I chose The Bubbler because, like one does around a water fountain, I wanted to get people talking and thinking with a point of view different from what you find in conventional media (or even conventional wisdom). On this day, I want to thank you all of you who’ve read and shared The Bubbler with friends and family (or maybe even people you disagree with, just to make a point…) For years, I’ve heard people tell me my take on things is unlike…

Desperately seeking disagreement

The problem with the reactions to the unnecessary death of George Floyd is that everyone is desperately seeking someone to protest. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for this country, this country is pretty unanimous in its reaction: It was completely unnecessary, and justice must be served. Everyone, conservatives, liberals, men, women, blacks, whites… everyone agrees that what happened was wrong and justice must be done. Now, cooler heads will stop and mention due process and allowing all of the information to come in. But even they will agree, right now, that what they saw on video was completely wrong….

Fact checking fact checkers

There are so many examples of ridiculous media bias that you’d need an entire site dedicated to it to try and capture it all. In fact, there are several. I prefer the Media Research Center, which is overflowing with great examples. But I just couldn’t help myself with this one. Yesterday, CNN had a “fact check” story about how much Donald Trump has spent playing golf versus Barack Obama at the same point in their presidencies. Before I get into it, I always wonder, who’s fact checking the fact checkers? I remember when fact checking became popular. It was…

A solution to the American divide

America has a lot of problems right now. We’re intensely divided. We don’t have a reliable, impartial media. There are people ashamed of who we are or our history. But there’s a solution. America needs mandatory military service. Israel has 2+ years of mandatory military service for every citizen, man or woman, and I think we need it, as well. If everyone had to serve a year in the military, they’d learn the history of this country from the military perspective – an entirely new perspective for many, I’m sure. They’d learn the great price some have paid to…

Land of the free? Home of the brave?

America is really being put to the test these days, and it pains me to say this, but we may be failing. Land of the free? Nope. We’re locked in our homes, and obediently awaiting orders from our fearless leaders to let us know when it’s safe again. We’re actively turning away from activities we want to do and people we want to see for fear of catching a virus. We’re not attending, or even having, funerals. We’ve shuttered weddings. Honking outside the house is the new birthday song. Home of the brave? People are scared to death. Even…

Ironically, the black community can set us free

Much of what needed to be said about Joe Biden’s “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black,” has been said. It is exactly the kind of racism the Democrats are always on about because it presumes that simply because of one’s skin color, they would vote for him. But more importantly, it underscores just how much Democrats think all black people are sheep. It calls out, in no uncertain terms, just how much they take the black vote for granted. Any why wouldn’t they? If you’ve read some of…

Who wouldn’t want secure elections?

Can we all agree that voting is a pretty special right, and an activity that we can generally agree needs to be protected? If voting in this country isn’t seen as reliable, it will throw our entire country’s faith in our system into turmoil. The ability to cast a vote, have it counted, result in a winner, and all respect the outcome is one of the most important things that set our country apart from so many others. So, regardless of how much evidence there may or may not be regarding the efficacy of any aspect of our voting…
