The Corona Virus is believed to have originated in Wuhan, a city in China. Thanks to the ever-vigilant media, we are getting inundated with charts and graphs about the disease’s point of origin, spread patterns, mortality rate, and general effects on the human body. With all of this data, we’re all getting a great lesson on how the disease started with one person in one city and then spread across the globe. We’re seeing how quickly a disease can spread and how it does that. We’re learning about the roles of air travel, awareness, and cleanliness in how a…
The real effects of the coronavirus
I wonder what has done more damage? The coronavirus itself, or our global panic because of it? (All you gotta do is name a flu, and everyone loses their minds about something that otherwise happens annually…)
Making sense of climate change
Consider the phrase “climate change.” (Or “global warming” or “global climate disruption,” as it’s also known…) Don’t think about it in the current cultural context. Just think about that phrase – on its own. Climate change is obvious. The climate is changing every single microsecond of every single day. The earth’s climate is probably the single most complex and dynamic concept man can attempt to contemplate – with the possible exception of humanity itself. What is “the earth’s temperature?” Think of the earth in terms of cubic square feet. Imagine the earth covered in one layer of one foot…
Conservatives have many friends who are scientists
Conservatives are often accused of being anti-science. Some say this because of the religious wing of the Republican Party and their belief in creation over evolution. In fact, it may actually be the other way around. (As an aside, I’m not sure why no one has ever seen the obvious compromise that God created evolution.) Take global warming. There’s more than enough evidence to suggest that mankind has little affect on our climate. There’s even more concrete evidence that says the earth’s climate is an ever-changing and dynamic organism that has been undergoing extreme heating and cooling since well…
Religion: It’s not so bad…
Conservatism is often equated with the “Religious Right.” While there certainly are conservatives who lead with their religion, the two are not the same. One’s dedication and adherence to religion varies from person to person. And being religious is certainly not a domain solely-owned by conservatives. In 2020, when one thinks of a religious person, they often think immediately of the religious right. But it is silly to think there aren’t liberals who attend church services under all variations and denominations of religion. Personally, I believe in God, though I don’t much need organized religion. Like many conservatives, I…
The conservative view of homosexuality
The day after I graduated from high school, I moved to San Francisco. There, I had two gay roommates and was exposed to the homosexual culture in the way only San Francisco can expose it. After living there for five years, I grew close to, and maintain, many gay friends – not only there, but in other parts of the country, as well. I never really gave too much thought to whether or not it was right or wrong. If it worked for them, and it wasn’t hurting anyone else, it wasn’t any of my business. It never bothered…
Ignore diversity
We’re often told that one of the United States’ strengths is its diversity. Some will make the assertion that this country was founded on diversity. The funny thing is that the people who originally migrated to North America to establish the United States share critical traits, to this day, with most everyone who still comes legitimately to this country – the desire to realize their potential and make a life for themselves without intervention from the government. Let me stress again, they came here because they had one trait in common. People didn’t, and don’t, primarily come here seeking…
Conservatives and immigration
Many incorrectly claim that the United States is a nation of immigrants. People have come to this country, from all over the world – often at great risk – to pursue happiness and live in freedom. In fact, they still do today. People flood to America more than any other country in the world. However, while our original population were immigrants, here in 2020, America has a distinct culture with majority population who were born right here in the country. The idea of Italian-Americans, Native-Americans, German-Americans, African-Americans is inappropriate and out-dated. At this point, most of us are simply…
Free Tibet?
It’s not too uncommon to see people driving around with “Free Tibet” bumper stickers. They see Tibet as the pinnacle of peaceful existence and want it freed from Chinese takeover. The ironic thing is that there was another country that was taken over by a far more hostile regime. The regime killed over 300,000 of it’s own people with weapons of mass destruction in the form of poison gas. The regime harbored and encouraged terrorists and routinely rounded up its people and made them “disappear.” The regime even tried to overtake neighboring countries. Finally, one day, that regime went…
Unions: America’s ball and chain
One of the few benefits of long Obama economic lag was the highlighting of unions as a problem that must be addressed. The unions represent nearly all that was currently bringing down the country. And, not coincidentally, it also represented liberal politician thinking in action. Thanks to unions, workers do not get paid based on their productivity or worth. Most unions pay their members in tiers based more on seniority than productivity or value. I worked within a union during one summer of college. Having been brought up with that good Midwest German work ethic, when I got on…
